Polyhydroxy acids exfoliate like alpha hydroxy acids but with a larger molecule, so they penetrate more slowly and irritate less. That makes them the sensible route into acids for reactive, dry or rosacea-prone skin, or for anyone who has tried glycolic acid and found it too much. They also hold water, so they hydrate as they resurface.
